Courtaulds

The Courtaulds Institute, Somerset House, The Strand, London
This Grade 1 listed building was constructed in 1776 and is of National Importance both architecturally and historically.
In 2017 Cintec International were approached by leading conservation structural engineers Price & Myers to assist in providing a structural support solution to works in connecting the two separate areas of the Institute at basement level. In the formation of new openings through extremely thick historic walls support would be required to the attached piers and columns to the walls above ground level.

The porch cochere connecting the main courtyard with The Strand with en-trance doors at either side.

The new openings to connect base-ment rooms together required new openings to be formed which were located beneath the main external walls with the columns and pilasters as may be seen in this image.

Support was required to be given to the columns to relieve the load from the intended new opening below.

40 Number Cintec GB24 anchors, 1100mm long in a 100mm diameter diamond core drilled hole, were installed as corbel anchors to transfer the 120kN unfactored load back into the main body of the wall.
The work was carried out in restricted spaces and required careful coordination with other specialist contractors. The anchor design was carried out by Epoc design.
